Focus and Scope

Studies by Undergraduate Researchers at Guelph (SURG) is a refereed, multi-disciplinary electronic journal that publishes research articles by University of Guelph undergraduate students. Developed through co-operation of the University's Office of Research and the McLaughlin Library, SURG is an open-access journal, available for free to everyone with access to the Internet.

The mission of SURG is to provide undergraduate students with exposure to the academic publication process. To this end, the journal accepts original research articles and reviews, primarily based on summer work and fourth year thesis and research courses. Submissions are welcomed and encouraged from all disciplines represented at the University of Guelph.

Peer Review Process

Articles are submitted to SURG must be supported by a faculty member, for example the student's project supervisor or a course instructor. The faculty member should review the submission for originality, integrity, and quality of writing, prior to submission. Faculty members may upload an article to the SURG website as a submission on behalf of the student if both parties agree that publication is suitable, or they may send a separate letter to surg@uoguelph.ca indicating that they support a particular student in the publication of their manuscript.

Upon receipt of a manuscript and approval by the student's supervisor, the article will be forwarded for peer review by faculty with expertise in a similar subject area. The article will be reviewed for quality of writing and quality of research, and comments will be forwarded to the author as part of the editorial process. The SURG editorial team may accept or deny a manuscript based on comments from peer reviewers.

Publication Frequency

SURG is published twice a year, normally in the fall and winter semesters.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides open access to all of its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Such access is associated with increased readership and increased citation of an author's work. For more information on this approach, see the Public Knowledge Project, which has designed this system to improve the scholarly and public quality of research, and which freely distributes the journal system as well as other software to support the open access publishing of scholarly resources.
