Kudos to the CIHR for the Draft Policy on Access to CIHR-funded Research Outputs, described by leading open access advocate Peter Suber of Open Access News, as "exemplary".
One strength of this draft policy is a requirement to deposit peer-reviewed research articles for open access within six months of publication.
Some aspects of the draft policy go beyond existing open access policies, and could become a model for future policies. These elements include an indication that in the future, adjudication of research applications will take into account the researcher's track record on making their work openly accessible, and a recommendation to researchers to consider retroactively self-archiving important works.
