Nova Scotia Library Association Establishes a New Award, Presents Student Prizes

The Nova Scotia Library Association has voted to establish an award for library support staff in the province.

Nova Scotia Library Association members voted in favor of the award at their Annual Conference held in Halifax September 29 to October 1.

The award, to be called the Emile Theriault Award for  Library Support Staff, will honour a support staff worker who has demonstrated excellence and has made a major contribution to the library community.  NSLA decided to focus this award on support staff in recognition of their level of participation in the association and their important contributions to the delivery of library service in the province.

Library staff generally fall into one of two categories – professional librarians or support staff.  Professional librarians have a Masters degree in library and information science from a university whose program is accredited internationally.  Support staff may have training as library technicians or in other specialized fields, or may learn their skills on the job.

The award is named in honor of Emile Theriault, the first library support staff worker who served as President of NSLA.  He had a long and distinguished career in technical services at both the Halifax City and Dartmouth Regional libraries.

Two established awards were also presented at the conference, both for student achievement.  Jessica Laroque of Fredericton was presented with the award for the graduate of the Dalhousie University School of Information Management with high academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to public libraries.  Terry Matthews received the award for the student in the Nova Scotia Community College’s Library and Information Technology program who has made the greatest contribution to the overall program.
