Nova Scotia Library Association (NSLA) News

The final numbers aren’t in yet, but the 2006 Library Boards Association of Nova Scotia/Nova Scotia Library Association Conference held from Friday, September 29, 2006 to Sunday, October 1, 2006, was a success.  The theme, “Creative Connections @ Your Library!” was enjoyed by all.  There was a full day of pre-conference workshops designed around school libraries and reading programs.  This was a great idea and was popular in part because it was held on a school in-service day.  The keynote address, “The 12 Habits of Highly Effective Librarians” was delivered by Maureen Sawa, Director of Public Service and Community Development for Hamilton Public Library.  Thank you to Janice Fiander as the Program Convener and Lee Outerbridge with Local Arrangements for their hard work and to our host Halifax Public Libraries.

The 2007 NSLA Conference will be hosted by the Pictou Antigonish Regional Library, September 22 - 24, 2007 in Antigonish.

From this conference, we have a new slate of officers for the Association:

  • Charlotte Janes, President
  • Lynn Somers, Vice-President
  • Marliese Kirby, Treasurer
  • Rachel Crosby, Secretary

The “sunsetting” of the federal Community Access Program is of concern to NSLA.  The Association has joined others in the province to lobby for the continuation of this program.
